Congratulations are in order for Casa Familiar for introducing Fronteras/Borders and giving the community of San Ysidro its first community newspaper. I am pleased to see such a strong organization develop a new and exciting way to continue serving the community.

As a member of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors representing San Ysidro, I am proud to recognize Casa Familiar for bringing information about news and events that are important to the residents of San Ysidro. I am pleased to share information with your paper about my efforts, through the County of San Diego, to serve San Ysidro residents.

Earlier this year, the San Ysidro Community Activity Center suffered a devastating fire, leaving hundreds of children, families, and seniors in need. In an effort to support the community, I was pleased to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve funding of $25,000 for the building’s insurance deductible, and begin to rebuild the community. The Center’s programs played a critical role in the lives of residents, and there was an immediate need for help. Fortunately, the County of San Diego was able to move quickly to support San Ysidro.

Help for the San Ysidro Community Activity Center is only one small example of the variety of resources that the County has available to the people of San Ysidro. The County can help families to access health care; help residents address lead hazards in the home; provide physical health screening and education; and assist parents with childcare and child support. These issues are only a small sample of what the County can to do help people. But, many people have trouble finding out about County services. So, I plan to bring a County Health Education and Resource Fair to the community of San Ysidro in the coming months. I will be contacting Fronteras/Borders with more details about the fair as the planning moves forward. I am looking forward to bringing all the County has to offer to the residents of San Ysidro. In the meantime, please feel free to call me at (619) 531-5439 or (800) 852-7321 or send me an email at greg.cox@sdcounty.ca.gov if you have any questions or need assistance.

San Ysidro is lucky to have such a tremendous resource in Casa Familiar. And now, residents can count on the local paper for information, news and events close to home. Fronteras/Borders will help residents continue building community identity and neighborhood character. I am thrilled that the community of San Ysidro can now benefit from the resources of Casa Familiar in a new and exciting way and I am looking forward to working with you for many future editions.
