SUBJECT: SUPPORTING A BINATIONAL EFFORT TO BRING THE OLYMPIC GAMES TO THE SAN DIEGO/BAJA CALIFORNIA MEGA REGION (DISTRICTS: ALL)
The San Diego and Baja California region, also known as the Bi-National Mega Region, is blessed with great weather, a robust transportation network, a diverse culture and a vibrant economy. Among our many assets is our ability to host large events in a beautiful, world-renowned venue.
The United States Olympic Committee is accepting proposals from cities who wish to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Today’s action will direct the Chief Administrative Officer to work with the City of San Diego in evaluating options for creating a Bi-National Olympic Host Committee for the 2024 Olympic Games and draft a letter for the Chair’s signature to the mayors of San Diego and Tijuana supporting in principle the bi-national Olympic Games.
CHAIRMAN GREG COX AND SUPERVISOR DAVE ROBERTS
- Direct the Chief Administrative Officer to work with the City of San Diego in the evaluation of options and to cooperate in efforts to gauge the feasibility of forming a bi-national committee whose goal would be to bring the Summer Olympics to the San Diego/Baja California Mega Region in 2024.
- Direct the Chief Administrative Officer to draft a letter for the Chairman’s signature that will communicate the County’s support in principle in exploring opportunities for a bi-national Olympics to the mayors of San Diego and Tijuana.
There is no fiscal impact with this action.
San Diego County is strategically situated at the most southwesterly corner of the continental United States, nestled between deserts to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, military assets to the north and Mexico to the south. Our unique region boasts a beautiful climate nearly year-round, which attracts athletes and sporting events throughout the year. The United States Olympic Committee hosts a training center in Chula Vista, which is just one of three Olympic Training Centers in the United States. Many large sporting events including the U.S. Open, the Buick Invitational, the World Baseball Classic, three NFL Super Bowls, dozens of marathons and even the first ever triathlon have been held in San Diego too.
We also have one of the most unique economies in the world, which is supported by the military, tourism, high-tech, biotech, and manufacturing, both north and south of the U.S./Mexico border. We are known for our private sector innovation and inter-jurisdictional government cooperation. Collectively, the San Diego/Imperial counties and Baja California region, known as the Bi-National Mega Region, had a combined population of more than 6.5 million people and a gross domestic product of more than $202 billion in 2011.
Our robust transportation network includes 6 border crossings, 5 interstate freeways, 5 international airports, 2 specialized maritime port facilities, and rail links to the north, east and south.
For all these reasons, we have a tremendous opportunity to showcase the Bi-National Mega Region by supporting the City of San Diego’s bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
